Mitchell Marsh, 34, sustained a testicular injury during a training session after being struck in the groin. The setback has forced him out of Australia’s first Group B match against Ireland.
Cricket Australia confirmed the development in an official statement.
“He is experiencing ongoing pain and discomfort, which is restricting his movement,” Cricket Australia confirmed.
“Scans have confirmed internal testicular bleeding, and he will require a period of rest and rehabilitation. His return to play will be guided by symptom resolution and medical advice.”
With uncertainty surrounding Marsh’s immediate availability, selectors moved quickly to reinforce the squad.
Veteran batter Steve Smith has been called up as cover and will travel to Sri Lanka to prepare with the squad.
“Standby player Steve Smith will travel to Sri Lanka as cover to acclimatise and prepare, should he be required,” the statement added.
Smith’s most recent T20I appearance came in 2024 against New Zealand. Across 67 T20 internationals, the right-hander has scored 1094 runs at an average of 24.86, including five half-centuries. His experience adds stability to the Australia T20 World Cup squad, particularly during a crucial early stage of the tournament.
Australia begins their Group B campaign on February 11 against Ireland at Premadasa, Colombo. They will face Zimbabwe at the same venue on February 13, then travel to Kandy for fixtures against Sri Lanka on February 17 and Oman on February 21.
The squad features a mix of established names and emerging talent, including Mitchell Marsh as captain, Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Renshaw, Marcus Stoinis and Adam Zampa.
Australia will now hope Marsh’s recovery progresses swiftly as they aim to make a strong start in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
