“A Chance to Prove Ourselves” – Temba Bavuma Aims to Stamp Authority in the India Series

“A Chance to Prove Ourselves” – Temba Bavuma Aims to Stamp Authority in the India Series

A lot would be riding on the shoulders of Temba Bavuma in the India test series. He is the most experienced batter in the South African lineup, having some knowledge of Indian turning tracks. Keeping that in view, the team is looking towards him to score big in the test series, though it won’t be an easy task for him.

Temba Bavuma was expected to tour Pakistan last month, but due to an unexpected injury, he was ruled out of the test series. The captain of the Proteas then worked hard to regain his fitness and was ultimately cleared to feature in the India Test series. He is now looking confident to prove himself again in the field, as his performances will matter a lot for South Africa in the subcontinent conditions.

"Having come off a long layoff from Test cricket, it was just about getting back on the field, proving my fitness to myself and everyone around and spending some time at the crease,” said Temba Bavuma.

He said that making adjustments in his batting was crucial to prepare for the India series. He described how working on his feet helped him to prepare for the challenge that will eventually test his skills during the India tour.

“I think that was important - to try to make whatever adjustments that I need to with conditions here in the subcontinent. I spent a lot of time on my feet in the field and it was a good exercise." said Temba Bavuma.

The Proteas captain then described the expectations of fans, which are driving his team to perform better in every series. South Africa recently won the World Test Championship title by beating Australia in the final at Lord’s. This is no ordinary feat for a team that still has many players who are relatively inexperienced at the international level.

"Whenever we go into a series, there's a lot more of an expectation for us as a team to uphold the world champion status," said Temba Bavuma.

He further said that playing in India is a great opportunity for them to prove their worth in subcontinent conditions. He is therefore looking forward to this challenge, which will get tougher in the coming days.

"From a confidence point of view, it's a case of us kind of walking proudly with that badge, being known as the champions. We have a lovely opportunity now coming up against India in their own conditions. It's a great opportunity for us to kind of stamp ourselves with that label." said Temba Bavuma.

South Africa won the last test match in India way back in 2010. It was a time when they had many superstars playing in the lineup, including Hashim Amla, Dale Steyn, Graeme Smith and more others. The current lot of players will once again try to emulate that performance, though it won’t be a straightforward task for them.

"We understand the magnitude of the challenge. For some of us, there have been moments of hurt having come from India. We know what it's about. We look forward to the challenge." said Temba Bavuma.

The Proteas captain didn’t have a great 2023 ODI World Cup in India. The memories of that tournament are still fresh in the minds of Bavuma, as he didn’t perform well during the World Cup. He faced plenty of criticism after that, which he later absorbed with a calm mindset.

"It wasn't the greatest of World Cups for me from a batting point of view, so I could understand why the criticism would have come but that's probably more from a player point of view," said Temba Bavuma.

Looking at the current circumstances, there is no doubt that Bavuma is one of the best players of South Africa in test cricket. This is not just a random claim, but a fact also stated by the head coach of the Proteas.

"He's our best player. It's as simple as that. If you take the last two years maybe, he's been one of the best players in the world." said head coach of South Africa, Shukri Conrad.

Keeping in view this statement, it is quite clear that South Africa depends a lot on Temba Bavuma. Being a captain, he has extra responsibilities to deal with, which basically brings the best out of him.
