Viran Chamuditha’s Record 192 Drives Sri Lanka U19 to 203-Run Rout of Japan U19

Sri Lanka Under-19 delivered a statement performance at the ICC Under-19 World Cup on January 17, 2026, overwhelming Japan Under-19 by a massive 203 runs after posting a tournament-defining total in a one-sided Group-stage contest.

Put in to bat, Sri Lanka set the tone early and never allowed Japan a way back into the game. Openers Viran Chamuditha and Dimantha Mahavithana dismantled the bowling with a record-breaking partnership that laid the foundation for one of the highest totals in Under-19 World Cup history.

Chamuditha, in particular, produced a knock that will be remembered long after the tournament, tearing through the field with a breathtaking 192 off 143 balls. His innings blended clean power with mature shot selection, as boundaries flowed effortlessly across all parts of the ground.

Mahavithana played the perfect foil at the other end, anchoring the innings with a composed 115 while allowing Chamuditha to dominate. The pair’s stand drained the energy from Japan’s attack and ensured Sri Lanka stayed well ahead of the run rate throughout the 50 overs. With a strong platform in place, the middle order added late momentum to carry Sri Lanka to a formidable 387 for 4.

Japan’s bowlers toiled hard in difficult conditions, with Timothy Moore emerging as the standout performer, finishing with three wickets. However, the lack of support around him meant Sri Lanka were rarely under pressure.

Chasing an imposing target of 388, Japan found the task steep from the outset. Early wickets and tight fielding kept the required rate climbing, forcing the batters into risk-taking mode. Amid the struggle, Hugo Tani-Kelly stood tall with a courageous unbeaten 101, showing composure and character against a disciplined Sri Lankan bowling attack. His century was a rare highlight in an otherwise challenging chase.

Despite Tani-Kelly’s resistance, Japan could only manage 184 for 8 at the end of their 50 overs. Sri Lanka’s bowlers maintained control through consistent lines and sharp fielding, ensuring the contest never drifted.

The emphatic win strengthens Sri Lanka Under-19’s position in the tournament and sends a clear warning to the rest of the field, while Japan will look to regroup quickly after a tough outing against one of the competition’s strongest sides.
