Wanindu Hasaranga Ruled Out of T20 World Cup 2026 After Hamstring Injury

Wanindu Hasaranga Ruled Out of T20 World Cup 2026 After Hamstring Injury

Sri Lanka allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga has been officially ruled out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 following a hamstring injury picked up during the team’s opening fixture against Ireland in Colombo on Sunday.

Despite completing his full bowling spell and returning impressive figures of 3 for 25 from four overs, Hasaranga experienced discomfort during the match. An MRI scan conducted on Monday confirmed a significant tear in his left hamstring. The scan results were reviewed by a specialist in the United Kingdom, after which the decision was taken to rule him out of the tournament on Tuesday.

Medical sources indicate that the injury is connected to a previous hamstring issue, although it is not classified as a direct recurrence. Hasaranga has struggled with fitness concerns over the past few years, including a long-standing foot problem that has affected his availability at various stages of his career.

Replacement Yet to Be Approved

The International Cricket Council has not yet formally approved a replacement for Hasaranga. However, Sri Lanka is expected to name legspin bowling allrounder Dushan Hemantha as his likely replacement in the squad.

Hemantha, aged 31, offers a similar skillset but has limited exposure at the highest level. He has featured in only three T20 Internationals so far, picking up four wickets at an economy rate of 7.85. With no additional spinners waiting in reserve, Sri Lanka may consider drafting him directly into the playing eleven in upcoming matches.

Major Blow to Sri Lanka’s Campaign

Hasaranga’s absence is a significant setback for Sri Lanka. He remains the team’s most proven T20 bowler and has consistently delivered on the global stage. Across 20 T20 World Cup innings, he has taken 40 wickets while maintaining an economy rate of just 6.01, underlining his importance to the side.

Sri Lanka’s upcoming group fixtures include matches against Oman on February 12 in Pallekele, Australia on February 16 in Pallekele, and Zimbabwe on February 19 in Colombo at the R Premadasa Stadium. The team will now need to quickly regroup as they adjust their plans without one of their most influential players.
